Welcome to my very first anime review! Of course we had to start this anime review series in my blog with the anime Kakegurui! I’ve been dying to make a review for this anime because I for one have been waiting for this to release, but sadly it took me this long to finally make a review because of all the work I’ve been doing for school. So let’s begin, shall we?
“Hyakkaou Private Academy. An institution for the privileged with a very peculiar curriculum. You see, when you’re the sons and daughters of the wealthiest of the wealthy, it’s not athletic prowess or book smarts that keep you ahead. It’s reading your opponent, the art of the deal. What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling? At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like!”
Let me tell you this before reading my whole opinion for this anime. When it was revealed that they were going to release this anime soon, I was one of the viewers who was excited for this anime to be released because of one reason. I actually read the manga before they announced the anime was coming, I was one of their devoted fans in hoping they’d turn it into a manga this would also mean I knew what was coming for the anime and their orgasmic facial expression. It was expected to happen.
Now I know there was mixed reviews about this anime, not to mention some of them were negative because of the characters facial expressions that’s just disturbing to watch, and also the main female character happens to be practically insane. Although I never really made it such a big deal for myself since I love how the story progressed along the manga. I was one of the viewers that was hooked to the beginning till the end of the latest update I’ve read. Sadly I stopped reading the manga because of the slow updates and how impatient I can be, but knowing that the anime was out I thought, why not binge watch it?
Episode 1 “A Woman Named Yumeko Jabami”
As Yumeko, the mysterious second year transfer student, enters the academy she was shown around the school by the class president Ryoto Suzui, who has been known as the class pet “Pochi” as a result of a large gambling dept as can be seen at the first few seconds of the beginning of the episode. Ryoto, being shown as a concerned classmate, warned Yumeko about the risk and madness of gambling that the school had had. He also questioned if she had any experience when it comes to gambling in where she answered “I know the general rules for poker and majong and the like”. At this point he gave a more brief explanation of how the whole school works, at this point Yumeko slowly revealed her ‘insane self’ by just laughing at his explanation of gambling. At this point on, you could already tell that everything would have gone down.
Of course being the new transfer student she became the ‘it girl’ of the whole class where in Mary Saotome, who is shown to be extremely egotistical in most of her gambling matches, might have gotten jealous of since Yumeko had most of the attention in which later was shown that she challenged Yumeko. The students from difference classes nearby heard of such and decided to watch.
I wouldn’t want to spoil you the whole gambling process, which I would love you guys to watch it yourself. In the end Yumeko explained how she figured out the trick behind the whole “Voting Rock Paper Scissors” gamble. She had a logical explanation which shocked most of those people that was watching, although sadly revealed that she was only relying on sheer luck to draw and play the card she needed in order to win. And that’s how the essence of gambling should be!
From this episode itself you could already tell the tension between Mary and Yumeko when it comes to gambling and how serious Yumeko is. I did certainly love the first episode as an introduction to the anime, and how it was accurate as the manga itself. I do look forward for more people to break down and reveal their true self when it comes to gambling, or let me call it their insanity.
Kakegurui is a promising anime for me, as I have read the manga and was amazed by it. I can’t wait to watch the following episodes and see the madness that is yet to come. The visuals, the interesting choice of music and the plot development definitely got me interested and would highly recommend for those who is in search for a new anime to watch.
